Tsai reported for The Honolulu Advertiser for 29 years and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser since 2010. The National Sports Media Association has named Tsai as Hawaii's Sportswriter of the Year seven times. He served three terms as president of the Asian American Journalists Association's Hawaii chapter.
Tsai was born in New York City, and is a graduate of Roosevelt High and the University of Hawaii. Tsai and his wife have two daughters, a fireknife-performing son and five grandchildren.
